evening blessing

"Saviour, breathe an evening blessing,
Ere repose our spirits seal;
Sin and want we come confessing,
Thou canst save and Thou canst heal.

Though the night be dark and dreary,
Darkness cannot hide from Thee;
Thou art He who never weary,
Watchest where Thy people be.

Though destruction walk around us,
Though the arrow past us fly,
Angelguards from Thee surround us,
We are safe if Thou art nigh.

Blessed Spirit, brooding o'er us,
Chase the darkness of our night,
Till the perfect day before us
Breaks in everlasting light."

~James Edmeston

Appreciated your comment on the phrase, "Thou my soul's glory," from "Fairest Lord Jesus." It's interesting how sometimes a few words from a hymn will catch our eye. I had a similar experience with the hymn "Take the Name of Jesus with You," which describes the Lord Jesus, in the refrain as "Hope of earth and joy of heaven."

Thanks too for posting James Edmeston's fine hymn, "Saviour, Breathe an Evening Blessing." Today is the 118th anniversary of his birth (and, minor point, I think his name is spelled without the "e" at the end).

You seem to be one who enjoys the traditional hymns, as I do. I encourage you to drop by my daily blog on hymn history, Wordwise Hymns. God bless.

Back again for another quick visit. (Sorry others haven't dropped by!) So many churches in North America no longer have a Sunday evening service. Sad. We can still sing a beautiful hymn such as "Saviour, Breathe an Evening Blessing." But it does seem to lose some of its impact as a dismissal hymn at noon!

With the arrival of fall, we begin to think of the Christmas season up ahead. If you do not have a good book on the subject of our Christmas carols, I encourage you to take a look at mine, Discovering the Songs of Christmas. In it, I discuss the history and meaning of 63 carols and Christmas hymns. The book is available through Amazon. (Might make a great gift too!)
