prayer for our nation

On this day, O God, I come before you to pray for this nation, my country, of which I admit I am fearfully grieved. We have all but eliminated You from our lives, even those of us who are called by Your name. We are lovers or our own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God...ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.  You have no reason to be merciful to us, and yet You are. You have no reason to listen to our prayers, and yet You do. But, just as Abraham prayed for the deliverance of his loved ones from Sodom and Gomorrah, I admonish You, O God, to be merciful to the United States, not because we are better than others, but because there is still a remnant of those who are Yours...who are clothed in the right-ness of Christ and made acceptable in Your Holy sight by His blood. I pray for this presidential election that Your will would be done. I have fretted and wrestled and thought and prayed. Is it more detestable to You that our country be led by someone who denies Jesus deity, or one who seemingly doesn't follow Jesus at all. Will the return of Jesus be more imminent with one or the other? Will Your mercy to our nation come through collapse or as we would see it, a return to prosperity and self-indugence? I don't know. But I ask that our nation would once again be 'a nation under God'...a people who pursue You...who champion the cause of the oppressed...who live in humility and thankfulness for any and all good gifts that come our way. Dear Lord Jesus, do not delay, please come quickly and deliver us from this world. Even today Lord Jesus...even today. Amen.
